CANTON — The Cherokee County Roads and Bridges Department will soon close a portion of Univeter Road to make way for repairs.

The department will close the road July 16 to 20 between North Industrial Way and South McCollum Drive in order to reconstruct the railroad crossing in front of Pilgrim’s Pride.

The county will post a detour during the duration of the project, and the route will utilize Marietta Highway, Hickory Road and New Light Road.

The Cherokee County Commission in June approved a memorandum of agreement between itself, Georgia Northeastern Railroad and Pilgrim’s to make the improvements at the railroad crossing.

Each group will pay $19,830 for the repairs.

The county also plans to resurface Univeter Road between the bridge over Interstate 575 and the railroad crossing, which will include a smooth tie-in to the new panels.

For more information about the project or the detour, call the Cherokee County Engineering Department at (678) 493-6077.
