Tribune takes home Georgia Press Association awards

CANTON — The Cherokee Tribune received 10 awards in this year’s Georgia Press Association recognitions and won second overall in the top category for “General Excellence” in the newspaper’s division at Saturday night’s awards banquet.

The local newspaper took home first place awards for best Sports Section and News Photograph, which was captured by Photographer Todd Hull with his photograph of a military funeral, titled “Paying Their Respects.”

Second-place honors were awarded to the Cherokee Tribune with the Hal M. Stanley Award for Layout and Design, the H. H. Dean Trophy for Editorial Writing and the W.G. Sutlive Trophy for Community Service.

Cherokee Tribune Staff Writer Kristal Dixon was awarded a third-place award in the Investigative Reporting category. She was awarded for her work on the city of Canton water rate hike issue.

The Cherokee Tribune also received a third place in the Otis A. Brumby Trophy for Serious Column.

Other third place awards were presented to the Cherokee Tribune for Educational Coverage and the J.C. Williams Trophy for most outstanding Editorial Page.

“We are proud of our staff and the dedication and hard work they do in bringing the news to Cherokee County and our subscribers,” said Tribune Managing Editor Rebecca Johnston. “Our continued commitment to the community is evident in our awards for Community Service and educational coverage.”

A total of 85 newspapers competed for this year’s Georgia Press Association awards in nine categories based on circulation.
