Just after 7 p.m., firefighters arrived to the two-story home on Jefferson Township Lane to find heavy smoke and flames, said Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
Cavender said the 69-year-old female resident was in the house when a thunderstorm came through the area and a lightning bolt struck the home.
“She immediately went down to the basement to check for damage and a neighbor went around the house to look for damage, too,” Cavender said. “Both couldn’t find any signs of smoke or fire.”
The woman told officials her smoke detector went off about five to 10 minutes later and smoke quickly filled her kitchen. She said she immediately retrieved her 75-year-old husband from the front porch to get to safety and call 911.
Cavender said the fire caused extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the home.
No injuries were reported and the county fire investigator is investigating the scene, Cavender said.
