WALESKA — The Waleska Farmers Market Pie Day Challenge saw winners in four different age categories and a pie-eating contest for residents.

The contest, which took place on July 26, was sponsored by the Georgia Farm Bureau, which gave away hats, shirts and prizes for all winners and donated pies for the eating contest.

The winners of each category were:

* Seniors: First Place — Candice Colby, Second Place — Tom and Ann Earley, Third Place — Roxanne Janes

* Adult: First Place — Mary Blanford, Second Place — Tricia Nitti

* Youth: First Place — Laura Baker, Second Place — Sasha Makarov, Third Place — Jillian Katz

* Pro: First Place — Lisa Harris

The pie baking contest was judged by Lisa Dudash, Loretta Walborn, and Waleska Mayor Doris Jones. First place winners received a watermelon and a sunflower, which represent the logo of the Waleska Farmers market.

The watermelons were donated by Carney Farms. The farmers market also held a pie eating contest for people who didn’t bake a pie to compete in. “We had over 10 people in our pie eating contest,” market manager Zach White said. “It was a huge night at the market.” First place in the eating contest was Chase Lynes, with second place going to Brady Carney and third place going to Laura Bemesderfer. The winners of the pie contest will represent Waleska in the Cherokee County Farmers Market Championship at Cherokee Fresh Market on Aug. 25. That market is located at 355 Stringer Road in Canton.
