CANTON — Eight arrests were made throughout Cherokee County in a sweep Tuesday night by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for wanted foreign-born individuals with active arrest warrants.

Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said deputies teamed up with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and went to various locations throughout the county.

One of the suspects, Edmundo Martinez, 24, was wanted in the county for a warrant for his failure to appear in court following a possession of cocaine charge in March, Baker said.

Baker said Martinez, who resides in Canton, remains in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center without bond and has a hold from ICE.

Although located in Cherokee, the other seven suspects who were wanted by ICE for various infractions were taken to the Whitfield County Jail, where they will remain until deported, Baker said.

Sheriff Roger Garrison lauded the deputies’ efforts for their work in the search.

“The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office will continue to work closely with ICE to aggressively locate and apprehend foreign-born individuals who violate local, state and federal laws,” Garrison said.
