William Leroy Engle, 42, of Douglasville, was pronounced dead after deputies located him hanging inside his cell, according to Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office.
No other inmates were in the cell at the time of the incident, Baker said.
“Attempts to revive Engle were unsuccessful,” Baker said.
Engle has been in custody since June 17 when he was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended License, Baker said in a release.
The inmate also had warrants in Forsyth and Cobb counties, Baker said.
The death is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Baker said at this time the Sheriff’s Office could not release further details of how Engle died until the investigation is complete.
