The Fresh Market winner competing on Saturday is Jeannie Ross with a Lemon-Fig Pie. Woodstock Market winner was Greg Corelius with a Uber Gubers Pie. Winners from Waleska’s market include Senior division, Candice Colby, Adult, Mary Blandford, Youth, Laura Baker and Pro, Lisa Harris.
Following the pie baking contest there will be a pie eating contest at 10 a.m.
Cherokee Fresh Market is located under the big yellow tent at 362 Stringer Road in Canton at Cagle’s Family Farm.
Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m.. The summer’s previous contests, as well as the final event, are sponsored by Cherokee County Farm Bureau.
Judges are Brian Jones, Chef de Cuisine of Ritz Carlton Atlanta; Deborah Geering, food writer from Atlanta Magazine; and Georgia Grown Chef Holly Chute.
The pie contest features categories for professional bakers as well as adult, youth, and senior categories of amateur bakers.
The contest is intended to demonstrate use of locally grown and available items, usually available by local vendors at each market.
The public is encouraged to come out and see the winner, and come up with their own ideas for entry next year, organizers say.
Items to look for will include fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, teas, coffee, honey, eggs, fresh bread, granola, jams, jellies, and other locally-produced farm and garden goods.
Any of these items or similar local items could be the inspiration of this year’s winner.
The Fresh Market showcases a variety of farm and garden items each Saturday and will continue through Sept. 1.
Starting Sept. 6 the Waleska Farmers Market will be open every Thursday night through the month of September until Oct. 4. The time of the market will be 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for the fall season.
