HOLLY SPRINGS — Qualifying begins Monday for the Holly Springs mayoral seat and three City Council positions for the upcoming municipal election.

The Post 3, 4 and 5 at-large council seats are up for re-election, with Michael Zenchuk, Karen Barnett, and mayor pro-tem Jeremy Smith now holding those seats on the council.

Zenchuk gained his seat in a special election last November to fill the seat of Jacqueline Archer, who stepped down earlier in 2011.

Mayor Tim Downing, Barnett and Smith faced no opposition in their bids for re-election in 2009. Barnett and Smith came on the council in 2004, and Downing was appointed by the council as mayor the same year.

City Clerk Karen Norred said she didn’t know whether or not anyone else planned to challenge any of the longtime seat-holders.

“It’s just hard to say,” Norred said. “I don’t know.”

Downing said he is seeking re-election for another four-year term, but the other three city council members did not return calls for comment.

Qualifying costs for the council seats are $180, and the mayor’s seat is $360.

All posts on the Holly Springs City Council are city-at-large positions with no geographic residency requirements, except as provided in Article II, Section 2.02 of the city’s charter.

Each term lasts four years and each council member serves as a chair for one of five committees.

Norred said those looking to qualify for the seats may come to her office at 3237 Holly Springs Parkway from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday.
