In an effort to keep pets threatened by fires alive, local firefighters are raising money for life-saving equipment designed just for four-legged friends.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is participating in a program during the month of September called Project Breathe, firefighters announced this week.

Invisible Fence Brand started “Project Breathe,” a Pet Oxygen Mask Donation Program, to provide oxygen mask kits to first responders. Each kit includes a small, medium and large mask to be used on pets.

“Our overall goal is to raise enough money for roughly 15 kits,” said Cherokee County firefighter Erik Mork, one of the coordinators of the event, in a news release. “I’d like each ‘first-out’ fire truck in the county to carry one kit. For every kit purchased through donations, Invisible Fence by Peachtree will donate one kit. The masks are compatible with our supplemental oxygen equipment and are reusable.”

Donation boxes can be found at local veterinarian offices around the county.

In Woodstock, donation boxes will be at The Animal Hospital of West Woodstock, South Cherokee Veterinary Hospital, Woodstock Veterinary Hospital, Family Pet Hospital, Etowah Veterinary Hospital, Trickum Ridge Animal Hospital, Olde Towne Animal Hospital, Highway 92 Animal Hospital, Animal Hospital of Towne Lake and Crossroads Veterinary Hospital.

In Canton, donation boxes will be at Veterinary Care Center, Free Home Animal Hospital and Hickory Flat Animal Hospital.
