Mary Rachel Cantrell, 69, of Canton died after she was taken off life support at 3 p.m, said Detective Candy Worthy, spokeswoman for the Canton Police Department.
“Her injuries were consistent with generalized massive trauma to the head and body,” Worthy said.
Cantrell was the only daughter of the late former Canton Police Chief James “Buck” Cline of Waleska.
On Wednesday, Cantrell’s own Jeep Liberty SUV located at her residence on the 200 block of Towering Peaks struck and injured her at approximately 2:20 p.m., Worthy said.
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Tim Cavender said emergency personnel and members of the Canton Fire Department responded to the scene off Highway 140 after they received a call.
Cavender said firefighters found the woman lying in the middle of the roadway and paramedics found she suffered severe head trauma.
Cantrell was flown by rescue helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital where she later died.
“The accident is under investigation by Canton’s Traffic Unit investigators and the investigation is ongoing,” Worthy said.
Cantrell is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lamar Cantrell, two daughters and four grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Darby Funeral Home, located at 480 East Main St. in Canton, where the funeral will also be at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The family requested memorial contributions be sent to the Canton First United Methodist Church at 930 Lower Scott Mill Road in Canton.
