This year will be the third event in Cherokee County and the seventh nationally to offer people of all ages an inter-denominational outreach opportunity and a chance for students to share their Christian faith. Locally it will take place at Tommy Baker Field at Cherokee High School from 7 to 9 p.m.
“We want everyone to come out for a fun evening and if they normally do not have a church they attend on Wednesday night, this is good opportunity for them to hear about Christ,” said Brandon Roberts, event organizer and a captain of the FCA at Cherokee High. “I think it is a great event for the whole community, and for all ages.”
In the first two years the event has grown locally, with about 2,000 in attendance the first year and 4,500 last year, Roberts said.
“It has grown every year and in the first year 40 people came to a relationship with God and last years 350 found Christ,” Roberts said.
There is no charge to attend, and the evening features music and worship that is exciting and enjoyable, Roberts said.
The event will be held at more than 400 locations throughout the nation on Oct. 10.
The national growth of Fields of Faith has been remarkable, organizers say. Since the beginning of Fields of Faith in 2004, more than 500,000 students have joined in the movement.
In 2011, more than 160,000 students gathered on 475 fields across 36 states to participate in the event.
Last year’s series of events saw 3,993students make first-time faith commitments to follow Jesus Christ, 5,205 recommitted their life to Christ and 8,741 committed to reading the Bible daily.
“The impact of Fields of Faith has been incredible in just these past few years,” said Les Steckel, FCA president and former veteran NFL coach. “It’s all about young people in these communities coming together on their school’s athletic field and challenging each other to go back to the fundamentals of reading God’s Word and coming to faith in Jesus Christ.”
While Fields of Faith has its roots with FCA leadership, the event is designed to include multiple national Christian organizations, local churches and ministries.
A local leadership team will determine the program of each Fields of Faith event. Roberts is serving as field organizer in Cherokee County.
