Irrelevant

A wise man once told me that the best thing about our representative form of government is that, by its very nature, we get what we deserve. So it was with Tuesday’s election.

As my final blog, I will try to tell you what the re-election of President Obama means to me on a very personal level.

It means I am irrelevant.

Please don’t think this is self-pity. Actually I am in tremendous company in my irrelevance: Jefferson, Washington, Martin Luther King, George Patton, the list goes on and on.

Apparently the signal was too subtle when, at the top of my game, the accountants of my chosen profession decided they could replace me with someone cheaper. Obviously, my decision to get a paralegal certificate was just a pitiful attempt to restore some sense of purpose and usefulness to my life. But this election tells me, without a doubt, that everything I believe is passé’. Not wrong, mind you, just outdated.

I have no hard feelings toward those who voted to return President Obama to the Oval Office. I wish you well with your creation, Dr. Frankenstein.

In my life I married well above myself. I was a good father to two daughters who make me proud every day and I had a good career that I left, although prematurely, with a satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

No need to be greedy. I will take my place on the park bench and feed the pigeons, collect my Social Security and pray I can stay healthy until I can get Medicare.

But when you see me on that bench, you might want to take a moment to chat because you, too, will someday be irrelevant…and it will happen sooner than you think.
