City engineer Joby West said Thursday crews are still working on landscaping, as well as the island area and retaining wall at the intersection of North Street and West Main Street. Water line installation, sidewalk improvements and road repaving have been completed.
The cotton mill worker statue in Cannon Park will be moved into the island, Canton Main Street Director Ginger Garrard said. The island will also include a sign that reads, “Historic Downtown Canton.”
“It’s going to be absolutely beautiful,” Garrard said.
West said there is no estimated finish date for the project, but said it is about 90 percent completed.
The new sidewalks stretch along North Street, West Main Street and Waleska Street, beginning at the intersection with Academy Street and continuing west until Waleska Street hits the railroad tracks.
Garrard said there have been a few complaints from business owners during construction, which began in spring.
“It’s not fun, but that comes with streetscaping,” she said.
The remaining work will not affect Saturday’s Veterans Day parade downtown, West said.
The improvements are being funded 80 percent by the state and 20 percent by the city as part of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Living Centers initiative. West said the approximate project cost totals $1.5 million, making the city’s contribution about $300,000.
