WALESKA — Two upcoming performances at Reinhardt University’s Falany Performing Arts Center offer concert goers an opportunity to enjoy world class entertainment and see first-hand the impressive talents the school’s music department has to offer.

There are now almost 180 students studying music at the local university and the quality is better than ever, said Jessica Akers, operations coordinator at the Falany Performing Arts Center.

“Our program has really taken off this year,” Akers said.

The Symphonic Winds under the direction of Dr. David Gregory will present the ensemble’s fall concert Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will give those in attendance a chance to enjoy everything from marches to overtures to movie music.

The 85 members of one of the university’s premier concert ensembles present a concert that has the reputation of being both impressive and inspiring, Akers said.

“The Symphonic Winds is one of most popular groups on campus and the conductor is astonishing,” Akers said.

Gregory teaches music education and conducting to the university’s music students, she said.

Under Gregory’s direction, the Symphonic Winds has earned the reputation throughout the state of Georgia, and the Southeast, as an outstanding musical ensemble which performs the finest in wind literature, she said.

During previous concerts, guests of the Falany Performing Arts Center have enjoyed hearing works by Peter Tchaikovsky, John Philip Sousa, Eric Whitacre, and Yaromir Weinberger, as well as a wide variety of musical selections.

On Monday at 7:30 p.m., the Reinhardt University Symphony Orchestra will present their fall concert to at the Falany Performing Arts Center.

Composed of auditioned Reinhardt students and community members, the group continues to impress audiences, Akers said.

Under the direction of Jerry Flint, popular for his work with outstanding orchestras, the group brings guests back each semester wanting more from the talented ensemble.

“Jerry Flint comes from the Atlanta Symphony and the orchestra is composed mostly of students and a few community members — and they are growing in popularity,” Akers said.

This will be Flint’s first time conducting at the university, and Akers said the school is anticipating some interesting changes.

During this concert, guests will hear such as Berlioz’s “Hungarian March,” Grieg’s “Symphonic Dances,” and Bizet’s Suite from Carmen.
