In Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services’ first year partnering with U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots, donors from Cherokee County have dropped off enough toys to fill a 12-foot trailer.

“It’s absolutely packed,” said fire department spokesperson Tim Cavender.

But officials with Atlanta Toys for Tots, which serves 17 metro Atlanta counties including Cherokee, say more donations are needed across the metro area.

Atlanta Toys for Tots is handling toy requests from 1,400 agencies this year, according to a Toys for Tots release. Some agencies may be turned away if Toys for Tots does not have enough toy supply to meet the demand.

Cavender said employees of Roytec Industries in Woodstock donated a large amount of toys to add to the donations brought into fire stations around the county.

“Most of the toys have been brought to the fire stations,” he said.

The fire department didn’t have a goal for toy collections in the first year working with Toys for Tots, but Cavender said the amount of toys collected has exceeded expectations.

“We’ve been tickled to death at how the community came out,” he said. “This was a fantastic beginning for us, and we look forward to doing it again in the future.”

The fire department will collect toys at Holiday Lights of Hope at Hobgood Park tonight and at stations today and Thursday.

Publix grocery stores are collecting toys through Saturday.
