Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jay Baker said deputies responded to a 911call Monday regarding an infant that was not breathing in a home off Alex Street near Bells Ferry Road south of the BridgeMill subdivision.
Baker said deputies attempted CPR on the 3-week-old infant girl prior to her being transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy report, Baker said.
“An autopsy was performed (Tuesday) but toxicology reports are not expected for some time,” Baker said.
The young girl’s parents were at the home with a relative who was believed to be caring for the child at the time of her death, Baker said.
“Although the incident remains under investigation, there is a possibility the death is a result of co-sleeping and the child was potentially smothered by accident,” he said.
Baker said no charges have been filed at this time and Cherokee Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the death.
