Cherokee County Coroner Earl Darby said Phillips was taken off life support Tuesday. He had been airlifted to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta following the accident.
Phillips, 66, was known as an avid bicyclist and worked as a real estate agent with Canton-based ERA Sunrise Realty.
“(He) was a good guy. No matter what, he never got agitated, most of the time had a smile on his face and was kind to everybody,” David Moody, ERA Sunrise Realty broker-owner told the Tribune after the accident.
According to his biography on the ERA Sunrise Realty website, Phillips lived in Venezuela as a child and was a bilingual Spanish speaker.
Josh Boggs, a friend of Phillips’ and an employee of Free-Flite Bicycles in Canton, said Phillips had broken his hip in a bicycle accident a couple years ago and worked hard to get back on the bike.
“He was extremely fit,” Boggs said. “We went riding one time, and he was destroying me on the bike. We were 35 miles in, and he hadn’t skipped a beat. Very avid cyclist.”
Boggs is collaborating with other friends of Phillips’ to coordinate a memorial bicycle ride on Feb. 10.

The ride will begin in the parking lot of Free-Flite at 1437 Riverstone Parkway in Canton at 2 p.m.

The ride will follow a route of 20 to 25 miles.
Phillips was traveling westbound on Highway 20 when he collided with a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck near the northbound Interstate 575 ramp shortly before 5 p.m. the day of the accident, according to police reports.
Police spokesperson Lt. Jeff Tucker said Phillips was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Tucker said no charges have been pressed in the accident.
