CANTON — A local center that has served adults with disabilities for decades has some new space.

The Cherokee County Day Training Center

last Sunday, celebrated the dedication of an additional facility on Univeter Road funded through a Community Development Block Grant and locally raised funds.

The center has served adults with developmental disabilities in the county since 1969, when the Jaycees purchased a home on Univeter Road for the care of developmentally disabled adults.

In an ongoing public/private partnership, the CDTC Board works with federal, state and local resources to meet the needs of the developmentally disabled population in Cherokee County through supported employment, day habilitation services and community-based recreational activities, leaders said.

About 45 dedicated employees under the leadership of director Steve Haggard provide an environment that is safe, productive and enjoyable for 104 clients.

At Eagle Point, through this Community Block Grant, the CDTC will be able to further enhance these services.

Additionally, the Board of Directors, through grants and locally raised funds, have built three groups homes in the county to provide housing for this population.

Commissioners Harry Johnston and Raymond Gunnin attended the dedication, which was also attended by more 75 individuals including clients, family members and community leaders.

During a short program, architect Rick LaRosa was recognized for his service to the project.

Board Chair John Smith, employees and clients including Ben Smith thanked the commissioners for the additional space.
