Brian Laurens and Scot Turner will debate at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the historic train depot in Holly Springs. The Cherokee County Republican Party is sponsoring the forum.
This will be the first chance for Laurens and Turner, both Republicans, to debate in public. No debates were held before the Jan. 8 special election for the House seat.
Today is the last day to submit questions for the debate. Questions can be submitted by emailing ccrpdebate@comcast.net.
Turner and Laurens will face each other in a Feb. 5 runoff after emerging as the top two vote-getters in a Jan. 8 special election for the position.
With wet weather during the first days of early voting, voter turnout has started sluggishly for the runoff.
As of Friday afternoon, 19 people had voted early in the runoff, according to Cherokee County Elections Supervisor Janet Munda.
“Of course, the weather was so nasty, so especially if people know they’ve got time, they’re going to wait until a prettier day to come out,” Munda said.
Early voting will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and Jan. 28 to Feb. 1 at the Cherokee County Elections Office in Canton.
Munda said she anticipates a higher number of voters coming in between now and the election.
Election Day for the runoff will be Feb. 5.
Only eligible voters living within House District 21 can cast ballots.
House District 21 spans all or part of the following districts: Air Acres, Arnold Mill, Avery, Bridgemill, Hickory Flat, Holly Springs, Liberty, Mountain Road, Teasley, Toonigh and Wildcat.
On Election Day, voters must report to their assigned precincts to cast ballots. Precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sean Jerguson resigned the House District 21 seat in December to run for state Senate District 21 after then-Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers resigned and accepted a position with Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Jerguson was defeated in the special election by Brandon Beach.
