The Cherokee County School District’s lead psychologist and two local schools were awarded state honors at the annual Student Support Team Association of Georgia (SSTAGE) Best Practices Conference recently held in Athens.
The school district has now received the most SSTAGE Star Awards in Georgia, according to district officials.
At the conference, lead psychologist Cathy McKenzie was presented with the association’s prestigious Debbie Rondem Award for Outstanding Leadership.
McKenzie was chosen from among her peers across the state as one who best personifies extraordinary leadership and also serves as a positive role model and inspiration to others.
“Cathy McKenzie exemplifies a passion for the ideal that all children can learn, and that every educator shares equally in this mission,” her nomination letter states. “She has a zest for problem-solving, whether it is for a single struggling student, or brainstorming with an entire school.”
District officials said McKenzie has been an integral part of CCSD’s development of its award-winning Response To Intervention procedures, as well as its Student Support Team program.
Additionally, Woodstock Elementary School was presented with the 2012 SSTAGE Star Award for Promising Practices at the elementary school level and Teasley Middle School received the award at the middle school level.
The school system was also named runner-up for the state system-level award.
