The Sequoyah boys are going back to the state playoffs.

The Chiefs clinched a Class AAAAA postseason berth with their 74-64 victory over Osborne Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Region 7AAAAA tournament at Sprayberry.

Sequoyah (21-5) got into foul trouble early on and trailed by eight. However, a run in the third quarter put the Chiefs ahead for good.

“The fourth quarter, we just kind of wore them down,” coach Jeremy Adams said. “I think our conditioning really stepped in and our kids just wore them out.”

Solomon Ajose led Sequoyah with 29 points, while Brandon Ingleton contributed 21 points and 16 rebounds. Dalton Satterfield also had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Sequoyah will face archrival Creekview (15-11) in tonight’s 8:30 p.m. Region 7AAAAA semifinal.

The teams last met Jan. 22, with the Grizzlies winning 58-49.

Adams said his team hopes to avenge the loss. When the teams met in the region tournament two years ago, there were 3,500 fans in attendance at Creekview.

“We expect that same type of crowd (tonight) at Sprayberry,” Adams said. “I know we’ll travel well, and I figure they will, too.

“We don’t feel like we played very well against them (in January) and we definitely want to avenge that.”

Adams said it’s more than just beating a rival. His team isn’t satisfied with just reaching the state playoffs.

They want to go far.

“We are trying not to be satisfied with just getting in,” he said of making the state playoffs. “We want to try to host at least one game at home. Hopefully, win the region and host all the way to the final four.”

Woodstock, which played in Wednesday night’s Region 5AAAAAA quarterfinal, lost 63-55 to Walton to end its season.

Also playing in region semifinals tonight will be the girls and boys teams from Cherokee and River Ridge, and the girls of Etowah and Woodstock.

In the Region 5AAAAAA tournament at Roswell, the Cherokee girls will play county rival Etowah at 4 p.m. The Woodstock girls will face Wheeler at 7 p.m., while the Cherokee boys will face Roswell at 8:30 p.m.

In the Region 7AAAA tournament at Dalton, the River Ridge girls will play Dalton at 4 p.m., while the boys face Northwest Whitfield at 8:30 p.m.
