A local church youth group is ready to go to work helping others this summer and those involved are asking the community to nominate homes and projects for the youth to fix up.

The Liberty Hills United Methodist Church is gearing up for the Nehemiah Project, which is designed for youth to “foster a passion for Godly service in the name of Jesus Christ.”

The project is entering its sixth year as a major force in Cherokee County and is an amazing four-day event for the local youth of the community, said Heather Shelton, director of children’s and youth services for Liberty Hill.

“If anyone knows of a home in need of simple repairs or a good coat of paint, we ask that they contact us,” Shelton said. “All work is done at no charge to the homeowner.”

This year’s theme is “One Life-Do Something.” The church hopes the program will form life-long habits of helping others in their youth participants.

Projects include painting homes, improving outdoor community spaces and other simple repairs of properties for people in the community.

Students in grades six through 12 are invited to join the project and lend a helping hand.

The project will be a four-day event, held July 10-13. The community service is followed by evening worship services, with inspirational speakers to encourage further support of the church’s cause.
