Commissioners will discuss the sign ordinance, specifically regarding flashing LED signs, at their 3 p.m. work session.
“It’s a huge problem, and it won’t go away, because it’s technology,” Commission Chairman Buzz Ahrens said. “But we could over-restrict it or under-restrict it.”
When businesses are granted variances regarding the LED signs, Ahrens said it creates a complicated situation and could set a precedent for other businesses wanting to use flashing LED signs.
The county commission cannot change decisions made by the county’s Zoning Board of Appeals, Ahrens said.
Ahrens hopes to start a conversation among the commission about how to amend the sign ordinance.
“With this evolution, we’ve got to figure out what’s right. We’re really going to have to go into our sign ordinance and look at it,” he said.
Additionally at the work session, the commission will discuss regular agenda items, hear a financial presentation and hear a presentation from District Attorney Shannon Wallace.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will present fourth quarter awards during the regular meeting.
During the regular meeting, the commission is also expected to:
* Consider approval to dispose of non-functioning office equipment from the voter registration office and the engineering department;
* Consider an amendment to a professional services agreement for road department uniforms with Cintas Corporation at a 6 percent, or $1,000, savings in 2013 and 2 percent savings in 2014;
* Consider approval to purchase a zero-turn mower from low bidder Mason Tractor for $12,544 using park bond funds;
* Consider amending the standard professional services agreement to include Title VI non-discrimination provisions;
* Consider approval of a $540,000 Georgia Department of Transportation grant for operating expenses associated with the Cherokee Area Transportation Services Rural Public Transportation program;
* Consider approval of a professional services agreement with Robert W. Graves & Associates to perform right-of-way acquisition services for county roadway construction projects in the amount of $700 for local acquisition and $1,100 for GDOT acquisition;
* Consider approval of a change order to the professional services agreement with Lose & Associates for design and engineering services for Hobgood Park in the amount of $20,903;
* Consider approval to purchase a new vehicle for the tax commissioner’s office from Brannen Motor Company for a cost of $23,899; and
* Discuss a notice of annexation received from the city of Holly Springs.
