Athens-Clarke County Police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said it may be today when warrants will be issued for a suspect, whose name has not been released.
“They are going to take warrants, but I don’t know if it will be today or tomorrow or when,” she said Tuesday. “They’re hoping it will be today or tomorrow, but it depends on what goes on with the investigation.”
The investigation is headed by Lt. Don Eckert and Sgt. Von Anderson of the department’s traffic unit, Sorrow said.
“I don’t know what the charges are. They are discussing that with the prosecutor,” she said. “There could be several charges involved. There could be several things, depending on what they found out in their investigation.”
Bowman, 19, was hit by a pickup truck while walking in the grass along a street in Athens just after 3 a.m. Saturday.
Witnesses said the truck veered off the road and hit her before driving away.
Officers found the truck soon after but could not find the driver.
Bowman’s uncle, Neal Bowman, said police came earlier Monday and told Emily Bowman’s father, Dale Bowman, that they are getting closer to pressing charges against the driver of the truck.
“He apparently deleted his text and phone messages after the accident, but police said they should be able to recover those,” Neal Bowman said.
Emily Bowman is a Woodstock High School graduate who attended Kennesaw State University during her freshman year of college.
