A local entertainment group has released a CD by iconic and independent musicians, with a song for just about everyone.
Surgeland Records, a division of Serge Media Group/Serge Entertainment Group based in Canton, recently released its CD “Tune In To MIND Radio,” a tribute to the powerful and talented rock vocalist Kelly Keeling.
The CD contains renditions of five original songs written by Keeling.
The eclectic CD has genres of music ranging from power metal, alt rock and classic rock to new age and world music.
“I basically asked the involved musicians to do whatever they wanted with the songs they chose and they achieved some amazing results,” says Serge Media Group owner Sandy Serge of Canton.
Serge worked with Keeling for a couple years and wanted to release newer versions of songs he wrote.
“The songs Kelly wrote are exceptional, but were recorded longer ago so I wanted some newer, updated versions of the songs,” Serge says.
A Louisiana-born multi-instrumentalist, Keeling has gone through many dramatic changes throughout his noted music career. He was first part of the rock bands Baton Rouge and Blue Murder.
Keeling then joined forces with famed drummer Carmine Appice in the Guitar Zeus projects and vocalized with some of the most renowned guitarists in the world such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Vivian Campbell.
Keeling’s next incarnation included being involved with the Deep Purple-sounding band Heaven and Earth and also singing for prog keyboardist Erik Norlander.
The tribute CD’s newer, updated versions of Keeling’s songs are inspired by musicians who have known or been influenced by Keeling.
Such legendary musicians who pay homage to Keeling’s songwriting talent include Appice, bassist Tony Franklin and others.
The first single released last October is an updated alternative rock version of the melodic rock song “Perfect Day,” which previously showed up on Keeling’s solo CD “Giving Sight to the Eye” as well as on the Guitar Zeus projects with Appice.
The single is performed by Carmine Appice & Friends, with Appice as co-writer and drummer, Franklin playing bass, and critically-acclaimed musician Anthony Z’sler playing acoustic guitar and providing vocals.
A legendary drumming icon, Appice has been the drummer for Rod Stewart and Ozzy Osbourne as well as for bands such as Blue Murder, Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and King Kobra.
A fellow former member of Blue Murder, Tony Franklin has played bass with The Firm and Kate Bush, among others. His latest stint is with Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Anthony Z’sler is a metro Atlanta musician who has released two albums, with several singles to critical acclaim.
Another new song on the tribute CD inspired by Keeling, “Hombre Salvaje,” is written and performed by world music guitarist Dominic Gaudious.
A well-known guitarist, Gaudious was a finalist on the television show “30 Seconds to Fame.” He performs at Downtown Disney in Orlando, Fla., almost every night.
Additional songs on the Keeling tribute CD include “In and Out of Time,” “Rising of the Snake,” “Free” and “Morning Song.”
