A Teasley Middle School student was recently awarded the first Collins Dixon Raider of the Year Award for his work ethic on the basketball court and in the classroom.
The team celebrated the end of the season with its annual banquet, where many student-athletes were presented with various awards and recognitions.
The new award was presented this year in honor of former Teasley student-athlete, the late Collins Dixon, who died Jan. 14, 2012, after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer.
“Collins’ legacy of honesty and integrity remains at TMS, so it is with these ideals in mind that the Collins Dixon Raider of the Year Award was founded,” Principal Dr. Susan Zinkil said.
The new award recognizes an eighth-grade basketball player or cheerleader who demonstrates a work ethic reflective of Collins’ both in sports and in school, and also earns admiration from peers and appreciation from teachers.
The first Collins Dixon Raider of the Year Award was presented at the banquet to Zach Milholland, the son of Denny and Christine Milholland of Canton.
“Zach is a dedicated student who strives for excellence and, in most incidents, achieves it,” Zinkil said. “He personifies the model set forth by Collins, and his recognition is celebrated by peers and staff alike.”
A plaque will be purchased and placed in the school’s trophy case displaying Zach’s name and the names of future winners, district spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said.
