After stirring tensions and debate among Canton residents and city officials for weeks, a proposed $6 million bond referendum finally goes to a public vote Tuesday.

The “fire bond,” as it was dubbed early on, plans to construct up to three new fire stations in the city, funded by increases in property taxes stretching out over 20 years.

The new stations would be in communities on the outskirts of the Canton, further from the existing fire stations in downtown and south Canton. Laurel Canyon would be the first to get a new facility, with The Bluffs and the near Canton Marketplace area to follow.

As early voting neared its end Friday, 464 of 13,000 registered voters in Canton had cast their ballet, said Cherokee County Supervisor of Elections and Registration Janet Munda.

Munda was unable to give a projection of how many voters might turn out for the regular vote.

“I don’t have anything (any similar election) to base it on,” she said of the somewhat unusual nature of the voting process in the election.

A major difference in this vote, as far as the process is concerned, is that residents will not report to City Hall as they have in the past for city votes.

Instead, Munda has said, Canton voters will report to their voting precincts, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters who live in the city of Canton in the following precincts will vote at the corresponding polling places below:

Clayton — Fire Station Community Center #21, 1190 Evenflo Dr, Ball Ground, GA 30107

Liberty — Liberty Elementary School, 10500 Bells Ferry Rd, Canton, GA 30114

RT Jones — Canton City Hall, 151 Elizabeth St, Canton, GA 30114

Teasley — River Green Heritage Club, 201 Clubhouse Dr, Canton, GA 30114

Univeter — Cherokee County Senior Center, 1001 Univeter Rd, Canton, GA 30114
