A Creekview High School student was arrested after the juvenile brought a handgun to school Monday, school officials said in a statement Tuesday.

The student’s name was not released because of age.

Barbara Jacoby, Cherokee County School District spokeswoman, said the student was arrested by officers with the Cherokee County School District Police Department and has been transported to a youth detention center.

Administrative action by the school district is pending, she said.

According to the school district’s discipline policy, any student possessing a handgun on campus is immediately expelled for nine days and scheduled for a tribunal, at which point it will be recommended to expel the student for a minimum of one year.

Creekview Principal Dr. Adrian Thomason wrote a letter sent home to parents Tuesday regarding the incident.

According to the letter, a Creekview parent reported Monday night regarding the possibility that a student had a handgun on campus earlier in the day.

Thomason said the high school and school district immediately began to investigate the report and determined the student had a “small caliber” weapon on school grounds.

There was no ammunition accompanying the weapon and district officials did not find the student had any intent to harm anyone, the letter stated.

“This incident reinforces the need for school staff, students and parents to work together in reminding everyone that all types of weapons are explicitly prohibited at school under school board policy and Georgia law,” Thomason wrote in the letter.
