WOODSTOCK — Not many golfers were pleased with their scores at the end of their nine-hole rounds Tuesday at Towne Lake Hills Golf Club, but the Creekview girls were at least able to smile after winning the event.

The Lady Grizzlies shot a 141, beating out Region 7AAAAA rival Cambridge (143) and host Etowah (149).

Cambridge’s Sabrina Long led all golfers with a 39.

The recent rain and gusts of wind played a role in Tuesday’s scores.

Creekview’s Whitney Stevenson, who shot a team-low 42, was happey with her score — particularly after a triple-bogey on the first hole.

“I would say I am pretty pleased,” said Stevenson. “I hit a triple (bogey) on the first hole and was able to come out and not shoot anything above a bogey.”

Stevenson said it was a tough round, but she did her best to stick it out. She said she put each mistake in the past and just tried to keep her head in the current shot.

“Every stroke counted, so I’m glad I sunk those nail-biter putts,” she said.

Megan Nay (49) and Claire Roop (50) also contributed for Creekview.

For the Lady Grizzlies and their counterparts at Etowah, Tuesday’s rounds served as a test run for the two-day county championship, which will be held April 15-16 at Towne Lake Hills.

Stevenson said she and her Creekview teammates, who won last year’s county team title at Canton Golf Club, plan to come back and play the course again before that time.

“I always love county matches,” said Stevenson, who won a playoff with Etowah’s Melanie Talbott for last year’s individual county championship. “They are always competitive. It’s out here again so I’m really looking forward to that.

Talbott led Etowah with a 48. Also contributing were Taylor Anthony (49) and Tyler Dawson (52).

Talbott said it was a tough day on the course.

“The greens were really fast (Tuesday),” she said. “The fairways were a little muddy from the rain, but, overall, the course was very tough.”

Talbott said she was still able to take away a few lessons.

“You can’t always have good days,” she said. “I was finding my swing a lot (Tuesday), and when you are doing that, you can’t go out and shot your best scores. You have to just try your best at it and hope your best is enough to win. But (Tuesday night), it wasn’t.”

Cambridge, who was without its No. 1 player, only had three golfers on the course. In addition to Long’s 39, Payton Schanen shot a 45, while Caroline Russell finished with a 59.
