This week’s firehouse bond election went down to a crushing defeat.
Over 98 percent of the city voters, or as Councilman John Beresford calls them, “the anonymous movement,” said “NO!” or didn’t vote at all.
“The populus did not speak,” he said.
Such a lopsided vote truly underscores the fact that this very important matter didn’t get an honest council assessment before being shoved under the voters’ noses.
There was a goodly amount of personal involvement on the part of certain councilmen. We can attribute part of that to parochial ego. The election will cost the taxpayers close to $12,000.
It should cost each of the supporting councilmen a like amount in attempting to get re-elected... then we’ll all know what price ego.
The populus did speak and they will speak again.

the Taxpayers. Remember that there was absolutely nothing to stop the
Council from simply approving yet another Backdoor Bond without asking
the Taxpayer's permission. Every cent of Canton's long term debt was created by previous Councils WITHOUT the
Taxpayer's permission. This Council chose to ask the Taxpayer's permission
and the taxpayers told us that they did not want to borrow any
money. And this Council WILL honor and respect that directive and will
not borrow any money. Some
councilmembers chose to publicly express their opinions on the bond and
some chose to keep silent. That is their Constitutional right and has
nothing to do with egos. Bob Rugg owes the Council Members an apology for this
letter.
