Dick Pettys died in October at age 66.
He began working for the AP at the Capitol in 1970, covering the waning days of Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox’s administration and later Jimmy Carter’s presidential run in 1976.
Decades later, Pettys reported on the election of the first Republican governor in Georgia since Reconstruction. He retired from the AP in 2005, but spent several more years writing on Georgia politics for the website InsiderAdvantage Georgia.
His portrait will likely be placed on the walls outside the Capitol press offices, where Pettys spent much of his career.
