The taxpayers said no to a $6 million Fire Bond.
They asked, “OK then, how about a 300 percent pay increase for the City Council instead? “
Councilman John Beresford calculates that at $2,100 per year, he is making 58 cents an hour. That means he is working over 13.9 hours per day, five days per week and 52 weeks per year ($.58 x 13.9 x 5 x 52 = $2,096). That’s not very much money for putting in over 3,600 hours per year.
I suggest we let them triple their pay to $1.74 per hour but insist they punch in and out so that accurate records of their time can be kept.
Speaking to the pay increase, Council member Hooky Huffman said, “If you want people to come in there that have half a mind you gotta give them some incentive.”
I guess 58 cents an hour is fair pay for someone with half a mind. Would we get someone with a whole mind if we paid them $1.16 an hour?
A lot of questions to be answered before this issue passes, but the adage still proves out:
If you want to become very rich, buy people for what they are worth and then sell them for they think they are worth.
