A famed, one-time Atlanta Braves player was arrested early Saturday north of Canton for possession of crack cocaine, police said.

Otis Nixon, 54, the speedy Braves center-fielder known for his steady glove, was charged with felony possession of cocaine after a Cherokee County deputy found more than a few rocks of crack cocaine on him and in his vehicle, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Nixon was driving north on Interstate 575 with a friend just after midnight Friday, when Cherokee County 911 received an anonymous call reporting that he was weaving, according to the police report.

A Cherokee deputy responded to the call and pulled Nixon’s Dodge Ram over near Airport Road, according to police reports.

He was given a field sobriety test, deputies said.

Nixon passed the test, the report said, but by then, deputies had already found a bag of crack cocaine, two crack pipes and loose crack rocks around the truck.

Nixon told officers that the crack must’ve been left behind by his son.

“Otis said he was always finding drugs and drug objects left by his son,” an officer said in the report.

But police said they would later also find more crack in the backseat of the patrol car.

Nixon, a resident of Ranger, Ga., told police he was driving through Cherokee County to take his friend, the passenger, home.

The friend, a 66-year-old woman, was not charged and was allowed to drive Nixon’s truck home.

Nixon played center field for the Atlanta Braves from 1991 to 1993 and in 1999. He is credited with being instrumental to the Braves taking the 1999 National League pennant.

Nixon is being held in the Cherokee County Jail on $11,880 bond, Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
