It was the furthest into the playoff the Lady Knights had ever advanced.
Coach Sarah Goodbread said she was pleased with the effort by her players, but home-field advantage worked for Veterans.
Soccer fields are required to have a maximum and minimum size, but not specific dimensions. The field at Veterans, in the central Georgia team of Kathleen, was considerably smaller than the fields River Ridge has grown accustomed to playing on.
“They were a good, solid defensive team, but the field was a little bit shorter than we were used to,” Goodbread said. “It was difficult for us to get our offense going when we are used to playing three balls and having our forwards run onto it.”
Veterans scored its lone goal late in the first half, and the Lady Warhawks advanced to face Columbus in Tuesday’s semifinal.
Overall, Goodbread was pleased with the season, which ended with a 13-7 record, matching the team record for wins in a season first established in 2011 and ’12.
“They played some of the best soccer I have ever seen then play,” she said. “I wish it had turned out differently, but I couldn’t ask for anything but their best.”
