Andrea Blanton, 45, of Ball Ground was charged with murder Thursday morning in the strangulation death of her father, James Reece, 77, also of Ball Ground, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
Baker said deputies went to Reece’s home on Northridge Road in Ball Ground on Tuesday after receiving a 911 call.
There, deputies found Reece’s body, which Baker said looked to have been there for several days.
They said that Blanton had stayed there with the body.
“Blanton had been staying in the home with her father’s body and despite the advanced stages of decomposition ... failed to report the death,” he said.
Detectives are still trying to determine when Reece died, “but it is apparent that he had been dead for several days,” Baker said.
Blanton lived in the home with her father and was his “primary caregiver,” Baker said.
A few who knew her said Thursday they were shocked to hear of the crime Blanton is accused of committing.
Alicia Lee, 30, a distant relative of Blanton who lives near Ball Ground, said she hasn’t seen her in about three years, but has known her all of her life. Lee said she couldn’t fathom the woman she had always known taking her father’s life.
“She was the most beautiful, sweetest woman ever,” Lee said. “The last time I saw her she was doing great. She was driving a Mustang. She seemed to be doing pretty well with herself. So this is just a complete and total shock to me.”
Lee said she has never known Blanton to have troubles, until now.
“She might’ve just taken a fall in the wrong direction,” she said.
Blanton was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with concealing a death and was released on $11,200 bond later Tuesday, Baker said. An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation revealed Wednesday that Reece died from strangulation, and Blanton was taken into custody and charged with murder Thursday, Baker said.
Blanton remains in the Cherokee County Jail without bond, Baker said. Neighbors who knew Reece declined to comment Thursday.
