A total of 124 new business licenses were doled out in Cherokee in April, which is the same as the 124 in April 2012 and down one from March 2013.
But Pam Carnes, president and CEO of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, said Friday that the flat growth is no cause for alarm.
“There’s no rhyme or reason,” she said. “I don’t think it’s significant enough for concern.”
Carnes pointed out that sometimes the number of new business licenses can be somewhat skewed when compared to the numbers from years previous.
“Permit numbers will change as the Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta open soon,” she said. “And a year later, those numbers will be different again.”
Carnes said while overall 124 isn’t exactly the number she was looking for, she still thinks the market is heading in the right direction.
“We are on the right track for a positive move,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean people are ready to take the plunge and start a new business.”
One Cherokee County man to take that plunge is Dale McGahee.
McGahee is a Cherokee native with a degree in business from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
Through the years, McGahee said he’s been a banker, an accountant and a real estate salesman.
He said Thursday that he didn’t have the idea for his new business Finery Boutique & Consignment until about seven months ago when he was working in sales at a clothing market in Atlanta.
It was during this time working in Atlanta that he discovered his love for sales and customer service, he said.
McGahee said he left that job officially just last month and has been getting his shop on Sugar Pike Road in the Union Hill community ready since.
The shop will open June 1 and will carry mostly brand new clothes, with some consignment pieces, he said.
For McGahee’s new shop next to Union Hill Grill, he said his target customers are women in their 30s and older.
Those women can look forward to “classy” clothing and accessories with low prices and in hard-to-find brands, McGahee said.
“Ninety percent of this is going to be wholesale (price) or even lower,” he said. “They’re going to get a deal.”
McGahee said it’s particularly important for deals with the current state of the economy.
It was also this state of the economy that him made think long and hard about his decision to open his shop.
He said it was intimidating to open a business in the present climate.
“It was, is and will be (intimidating) for a while,” he said. “But you won’t succeed if you don’t try.”
