WOODSTOCK — The Downtown Development Authority in Woodstock launched the Visit Woodstock mobile app this week, compatible with iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Director of Tourism and Visitors Center Operations for the DDA Kyle Bennett said they worked with a developer over the past six or so months to create the free application.

“In the past couple of years, smartphone apps have really increased in popularity, as more and more people have smartphones and tablet devices,” Bennett said. “The big plus with the app, compared to a mobile website, is other than when you download the app, you don’t have to have a signal or Wi-Fi to actually interact with the app.”

area and includes many in-app features like descriptions of restaurants, business listings and locations, attractions and a full calendar of events.

“It allows your visitors center to basically be open 24/7,” Bennett said. “It allows us to really extend our presence.”

Visit Woodstock allows users to book hotels directly from the app, and has an interactive map with information on everything from shops and attractions to parking locations and directions.

“When people travel, a lot of times they go to the app stores and they search for wherever they’re going,” Bennett said. “They’ll see what apps come up that offer them travel tips, more people are doing that, so you want to have that capability (as a city).”

Bennett said in a few months the app will be updated to include a notification system that can alert app users about event changes, cancellations and special offers in Woodstock.

“We were very, very pleased about how it turned out,” Bennett said. “We’d like to let the public know if, while they’re using the app, if they come across any problems, if the app freezes up when they do a certain thing or if they see some information that’s incorrect, or maybe some information they’d like to see on the app that we don’t currently have listed, please contact us and let us know.

“The app just started and we’re trying to make it as best as possible. I know we’ll have a lot of improvements to make over the next few months until we really perfect it.”
