WOODSTOCK — A man, woman and infant were injured when a tire on the truck they were in apparently blew out as they traveled north on Interstate 575 on Thursday afternoon, Woodstock Police said.

Paul Asher from Smyrna was driving the black Ford truck northbound on I-575 with passengers Lauren Lambert and her 5-month-old baby, also from Smyrna, when the accident happened at about 1:30 p.m., said Lt. Troy Brazie who oversees the traffic enforcement unit for the Woodstock Police Department.

The baby was taken by life-flight helicopter to Children’s at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta and both adults were taken WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for treatment, said Cherokee County EMS spokesman Tim Cavender.

Brazie said the infant was released later Thursday evening with only superficial injuries and both adults remained in the hospital as of 6 p.m. with non-life-threatening injuries.

Brazie said Asher, Lambert and her baby were on the way to a doctor’s appointment in Canton when the wreck occurred.

A preliminary investigation showed the crash may have been caused by a rear passenger-side tire that blew out, Brazie said.

Lambert was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the truck, Brazie said.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt and the baby was in an infant seat, according to Brazie.

Cavender said the pickup truck rolled several times and landed on a wall under the RidgeWalk bridge, just past Exit 9 on I-575 North. Both lanes of I-575 northbound were blocked until the truck could be removed, Cavender said.

“A female passenger was able to remove herself from the truck and was found sitting underneath the bridge with her 5-month-old baby,” Cavender said. “The male driver had to be removed from the vehicle and was in critical condition.”

The accident shut down the northbound side of I-575 for more than an hour.
