CANTON — The Canton Police Department issued warrants Friday for the arrests of Cherokee County School Board member Kelly Marlow, political adviser Robert Trim and Cherokee County Republican Party Secretary Barbara Knowles, on charges of making false statements that School Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo tried to hit them with his car.

Canton Police Chief Robert Merchant confirmed Friday night that warrants were issued earlier Friday for the three, and that they each face charges of making false statements for telling officers that Petruzielo attempted to run them over after a School Board meeting in June.

Following a heated meeting of the school board June 13, Knowles dialed 911 and reported that Petruzielo had been driving aggressively and almost ran her and Marlow over, as they walked across the street in downtown Canton, according to a copy of the 911 call, obtained by the Cherokee Tribune.

In the copy of the 911 call, Knowles can be heard telling the operator that she was walking to the Painted Pig Tavern in Canton after the meeting when “the superintendent of the school raced right by me in his white BMW and did not stop.”

Trim was a witness to the incident, Merchant said.

A Canton Police officer responded and took their statements.

According to the police report, Knowles said she felt Petruzielo’s failure to slow down was intentional and that they felt threatened.

But Merchant said Friday these claims turned out to be false.

“They lied,” he said. “The bottom line is based on the evidence we have, this was just totally fabricated.”

Petruzielo released a statement Friday night defending his innocence.

“As I indicated when I was informed of the report being filed against me, this is a very serious allegation that has no basis in fact,” Petruzielo said.

Merchant agreed that the accusations made by Marlow, Trim and Knowles are serious, as are the charges they now face for lying about the incident.

No matter what controversy is going through the school board, making such false statements is inexcusable, Merchant said.

“I understand that (Marlow) believes she’s the saving grace for this county,” Merchant said. “But as far I’m concerned, I’m going to do everything I can possibly do to make sure she gets prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, along with Knowles and Trim.”

Merchant said he would “strongly encourage” Marlow, Trim and Knowles to turn themselves in.

Marlow, Trim and Knowles could not be reached for comment by press time Friday night.

How in the world do you people defend crazy? Dr. P didn't call in a false report! It was Marlow, Trim & Knowles. What in the world will it take for you all to start thinking logically and not hold your ridiculous grudge against Dr. P for not rubber-stamping your precious charter school. By the way, remind me again how much of our tax dollars left Georgia for Florida? You all should be ashamed of yourselves!

the police chief was not at the scene, so how does he know what happened? it seems "merchant" should be the one charged for lying.

if a policeman came to the scene and got a report of complaint, how does the policeman and his boss know what actually happened since they weren't there.

this all looks like corruption from the top down, and it violates citizens' rights innocent until proven guilty. "merchant" sounds like he's a puppet for injustice, a greatly biased avocate against "marlow" and he is a croked cop with an ax to grind.

the police should be investigated, and the guy "merchant" replaced/fired for his gross rashness & misbehavior, & violation of his office as a crooked police official.

Well Mr. Say What! The police man and his boss have video of what happened. The video captures it all. That's how things work. It's called evidence. Pretty solid evidence that your friend Kelly and her "minions" lied!

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo should be ashamed. The charge is nasty enough, and now he runs his mouth to the press making everone look bad. Set up a defense fund for Marlow, Trim and Knowles and show the "good" doctor the door --the iron one with bars.

Just a reflection on what has gone on in Cherokee County on almost all levels. Dr. P needs to go. This county needs to appoint an actual educator. But just keep electing and appointing athletic directors. Those of you with children in this school system are deaf, dumb and blind.

Kelly Marlow, proving you can't fix stupid! But what's really alarming is the people that thought she had the intelligence to be a school board member. Those people should have their head examined also.

This upheaval with the school board reminds me of the problems in the 1990's, when Cherokee County schools lost their accreditation. We do not want to go through that again. Our schools are top notch, and don't need the personal agendas of three people causing trouble. If there are issues, take care of them on the local level; don't damage the whole system.

Is there any doubt now that this woman is the one who is on a mission to harm others. She is not the victim but the perpetrator. Citizens unite and demand that she be removed from the board. This woman can't be left in charge of our kids, not even a single child in our county.
