Suspensions upheld for DeKalb school board members

ATLANTA (AP) — Gov. Nathan Deal says the suspensions of two DeKalb County school board members who tried petitioning for their reinstatement have been upheld.

Deal said Wednesday that Chief Administrative Law Judge Maxwell Woods ruled that Sarah Copelin-Woods and Pamela Speaks didn't prove that being reinstated would help the school system keep its accreditation or earn it back if the district were to lose it.

The system was put on probation by an accreditation agency after a six-month investigation.

In a report, the accreditation agency cited long-term leadership issues including nepotism, fiscal mismanagement, inappropriate micromanagement and intimidation within the district.

The audit resulted in six of nine school board members being removed.

Deal says two others have petitioned for reinstatement and rulings on their cases will be determined at a later date.

Vandals damage, shatter windows in Dalton

DALTON, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say windows at between 35 and 40 businesses in Dalton have been damaged or shattered by vandals.

Police spokesman Bruce Frazier tells the Dalton Daily Citizen the suspects either shot or threw rocks at the businesses early Tuesday morning and there were no reported injuries.

Police say they found marbles near some of the broken windows, and surveillance footage from several cameras show a car driving by some of the businesses that were targeted. Authorities are working to get a more detailed description of the vehicle and possible suspects.

Frazier says nothing was stolen from any of the businesses that were targeted.

Dalton is about 90 miles northwest of Atlanta.
