DEAR EDITOR:

It has come to the attention of the Nelson City Council and city manager a petition is going around to get signatures to have the charter turned in.

It amazes me since for the first time the city has $100,000 in reserves, a functioning budget, a capital improvement plan and will have a park the city will be proud of done by 2014.

Unfortunately, we are ridiculed by innuendos of being outsiders and trying our evil ideas which are totally untrue.

We are told Nelson residents want our chief of police to not drive his vehicle home and does not deem fit what the city manager is being paid.

If the chief drives his car home it is because the previous council approved him to do so and when we were elected, were we to change what was approved by, not outsiders, but your people from this town?

That he was given a raise, true Penny Thacker and the council at that time promised him a raise if he got his degree, which he did and we thought it proper to give him what was promised.

City Manager Brandy Edwards has worked for the city 10 years and when we were elected we worked with the prior council’s budget which had given her a raise and her salary was $48,000. When we worked on the new budget we reduced her pay to $46,000 with the promise if we were able to make up that $2,000, we would give it back in our new budget which was approved.

Where were the citizens of Nelson when they appointed two individuals to lead Planning and Zoning and be able to do what they pleased, going on private properties, which we found uncalled for and eliminated those positions? You would not recognize your town if we had let this go on.

Where were the citizens when Lamar Kellett led the park project and almost put us over $150,000 with a warehouse-size pavilion, where was the outrage then?

It would be nice if instead of going behind closed doors and not telling the truth to people who have never set foot in City Hall and who do not have a clue of what is the truth.

I personally challenge the people who want to tell the chief of police not to drive his car back and forth and that we should have not honored his promised raise and tell Brandy Edwards that she earns too much.

When we are called liars it would be nice if you were given the correct information which you apparently have not been told.

Where was their outrage when Nelson gave Cherokee $100,000 for a fire truck that was given to Ball Ground, $75,000 dollars which was from SPLOST monies and $30,000 from general funds, where was your outrage then and did you know about this?

How do you feel that the major that you voted for stuck his middle finger at you and quit? Why did he do that?

He might have said his powers were taken away from him, by whom? Not by us, the prior council did that and we agreed to keep it in place.

He knew he had no powers, but then again he was going to be the savior of Nelson but I guess cleaning streets makes him a worthy electable candidate to a position he thought he could change back.

He never wanted to help the city, he said it in a public meeting that he was not willing to work with the city manager. And when he had one of his California ideas we were not inclined to have them implemented in Nelson and you think we are bad.

I know of few citizens who own many properties in Nelson and you with his ideas would have been paying twice or three times the amount of taxes you are paying now.

He also wanted to eliminate the manager position and outsource the police and the cutting of the grass.

It’s a shame the people that have never been at a council meeting and who have never supported us have so much to say.

You should get your information from the horse’s mouth, not from people who want to agitate you.

Nelson, wake up, you at least have a reserve now and have you noticed, your taxes were reduced thanks to us, the outsiders. It would have been nice if you had contacted everyone on the city council.

In reference to Marc Maseman, he has never been to a council meeting, ever.

"Where was their outrage when Nelson gave Cherokee $100,000 for a fire truck that was given to Ball Ground,"

Does anyone know any further details about that happened here?
