Highway 140 in Canton is down to one-lane traffic after a water main burst under the road near its intersection with the Reinhardt College Parkway connector early Friday morning.

Canton Fire Chief Dean Floyd said the aged pipe burst just before 7 a.m., but the effect on traffic has been minimal.

Traffic coming southbound on Highway 140 is being diverted over into a turn lane, and northbound traffic is traveling as usual.

The city is now waiting for utility workers to come in to help resolve the problem and reopen the road, but officials could not give a timeline.

“We’re getting it fixed as quick as we can,” said City Manager Scott Wood.

Wood added that Friday morning’s water main break was the third on Highway 140 in the past two years.

Authorities are advising drivers to avoid the area.
