From staff reports

A 64-year-old north Cherokee County woman was sent to a Jasper hospital who was suffering from smoke inhalation from a fire in her home Friday morning.

Cherokee County firefighters responded to the woman’s home on the 1900 block of Hornage Road in the Clayton community about 9:30 a.m. and found smoke coming from the home, said Tim Cavender, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman.

After making it out of the burning, smoke-filled home, Cavender said the woman was transported to Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. Another resident, a 63-year-old man, also made it out of the home and was uninjured.

Cavender said most of the damage to the one-story home appears to be caused by smoke from the fire, which started in the front bedroom.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire, Cavender said.
