We shouldn’t resort to bullying bullies

DEAR EDITOR:

Many lines have been crossed in Syria including numerous invasions by many empires, most recently the British and French. Today, as with Saddam, Assad’s minority, more secular Ba’ath Party is trying to rule the Islamic majority using Russian weapons.

More than 2 million Syrians recently left the country (5,000 per day). We’ve spent over $100 million of taxpayer money on humanitarian aid — this is where we should be remembered in this conflict.

We said use of chemical weapons was a red line not to be crossed while 100,000+ Syrians were erased using conventional weapons.

It wasn’t a red line under Reagan when Saddam used them against Iran and his own people. There’s been little help for our veterans or the Vietnamese and others over our use of Agent Orange.

So, recent history is screaming at us not to use bombing as a solution. It isn’t just that we’re weary of war, it’s that we’re weary of the politics and justifications.

One of the weakest legislatures ever is taking sides based on how it will look in their political career versus whether it will help stabilize the region. And the deficit hawks are fine with spending billions of dollars in military action but do nothing about the red lines crossed in our country — poverty, joblessness, corporate greed, voter suppression, Wall Street speculation, gutting of public services and ad infinitum.

A representative democracy doesn’t need to bully to stop bullies, but make the hard decisions to set a better example to the world.
