CANTON — A Canton man was charged and sent to a local hospital Thursday night after nearly flipping his car on Interstate 575, police said.

Emil William Childress, 37, was sent to Northside Hospital-Cherokee at about 10 p.m. after crashing his 1996 Ford Explorer near exit 16 in Canton, authorities said.

Canton Police and Fire emergency workers arrived on the scene shortly after the single-car wreck and helped get Childress medical treatment, said Canton Fire Chief Dean Floyd.

Gordy Wright, spokesman for Georgia State Patrol, which also assisted at the crash site, said Friday that the Canton man was driving south when he ran off the road into the median.

Childress then overcorrected and started to flip before the car slammed down on its side in the ditch, Wright said.

Childress was charged with failing to maintain lane and possession of an open container in the passenger area, Wright said.
