WOODSTOCK — A Cartersville man is in jail after police say he was driving the wrong way on Highway 92 and ran Cherokee County deputies off the road early Thursday morning.

William Scott Bentley, 55, was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road and hit and run, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Just after midnight, Cherokee deputies George Rose and Frank Jones were traveling west on Highway 92 near Bells Ferry Road when they spotted a Dodge Caravan cross over the concrete median of Highway 92 and start traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, Baker said.

“The wrong way driver almost struck the deputies’ vehicles as it traveled east bound,” Baker said. “Deputies crossed over into the east bound lanes in an attempt to head the vehicle off before it struck any westbound traffic.”

A wrecker driver, Billy Smith of Gwinnett County, who was traveling eastbound on 92 near Wabash Trail, witnessed the incident and crossed over, pulling his wrecker in front of the vehicle driven by Bentley, Baker said.

Smith’s actions prevented the suspect from traveling any further, Baker said.

Bentley is in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $4,371.00 bond, Baker said.
