CANTON — An investigation into a Canton man’s story that he was kidnapped, robbed and beaten up by four men Sunday has halted after police say he checked himself out of the hospital and cut off communications with detectives.

Jose Cortez Fonseca, 32, told police he was walking home from La Oaxaquena Grill on Marietta Road at about 3 a.m. Sunday when four Hispanic men offered him a ride and later robbed him with a Beretta pistol, according to a report from the Canton Police Department.

The report states Fonseca also told detectives the unknown suspects stopped the car, got out and beat him up before dumping him off at another location, telling him to run away.

But then, once the investigation was underway, police said Fonseca checked himself out of Northside Hospital-Cherokee, where he had been treated for minor injuries, and hasn’t been heard from since.

Detectives said they tried to find the victim at the address he gave them, but that address was wrong, and the only phone number he gave was apparently for the cellphone that had been stolen.

The Canton Police Department confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the investigation remains on hold, because Fonseca still hasn’t come forward.
