Patricia Moore-Pastides will be on hand from noon to 2 p.m. at Leaning Ladder with her latest book, “Greek Revival from the Garden.” Her first book, “Greek Revival: Cooking for Life,” introduced readers to wonderful flavors and health benefits of the traditional Mediterranean diet.
Her latest endeavor encourages vegetable gardening, home cooking and increased enjoyment of plant-based dining. The popular author’s books help readers with ideas on how to grow food and transform it into meals that are both delicious and nutritious.
Cost for the tasting is $15, and includes a healthy sampling of dishes, a $5 coupon toward the purchase of her book and a $5 coupon that can be used at Leaning Ladder Premium Olive Oil and Vinegar.
“We are looking at this as an alternative for Thanksgiving, with lighter ideas for hor dourves, or for lighter dishes the day before or the day of,” said Ellen Ward, one of the three owners of FoxTale Book Shoppe. “Her recipes are very healthy from the garden, and we will be sampling some of the recipes prepared using some ingredients from the Leaning Ladder.”
The Leaning Ladder chef will do the prep work and the author will finish up the dishes during the event, Ward said.
Moore-Pastides received a master’s degree in public health from Yale University School of Medicine and teaches adult and children’s Mediterranean cooking classes at an interactive community cooking program offered by the University of South Carolina’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program.
She also teaches Healthy Mediterranean Cooking at USC in the department of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management.
With her second cookbook, Moore-Pastides heads to the garden to demonstrate how to make a do-it-yourself healthful lifestyle possible for the whole family, according to her publisher, The University of South Carolina Press.
Moore-Pastides, an accomplished cook and public-health professional, presents all new recipes focused on bringing the bounty of the garden to the table in easy and accessible ways. Topics include preparing the soil, composting to create organic fertilizer, watering, working with basic tools and dealing with common pests and problems. Color photographs are provided to inspire new gardeners toward more than just tomatoes and cucumbers, the publisher said.
