CANTON — Events in downtown Canton this year aim to encourage support from the local community for the holidays.

On Saturday, the first Battle of the Bands will help support the Teasley Middle School band program.

The event takes place from 12 to 6 p.m. downtown at Cannon Park. Attractions include local artists, food and drink, shopping and cornhole games.

The Teasley Middle School Band Program will offer a 50/50 raffle, and donations help support the woodwind, percussion or brass sections of the program.

Sponsors Audio Intersection, Canton Main Street Program and The Painted Pig Tavern have come together to raise awareness for music and to organize an enjoyable event with local acts, organizers said.

Sean Furilla, band director of Teasley Middle School, Joseph Duinup, owner of the Painted Pig Tavern, and Michael Bucker of Audio Intersection took part in organizing the event.

“I’m an alumni of Teasley Middle School,” Buckner said. “The school has not had new instruments in about 20 years since it opened in the 1990s. Sometimes a new instrument could cost up to $3,000, so we knew something needed to be done.”

The band program at Teasley Middle School has 250 students participating, which accounts for 25 percent of the student population at the school.

The raffle will give participants a chance to enter to win half of what is raised, while the remaining half will go to the band program.

Performing bands include Woodstock’s alternative rock and blues band Modern Myth, indie rock and ska band Ye Flask out of Atlanta, The Uniform, Justin Harmon and studio musician Tyler Lee Frush.

Others are expected to sign up to compete by Saturday.

Hot chocolate will be provided, and sponsor The Painted Pig Tavern encourages attendees to stop by the pub for many options on tap.

Football games at Audio Intersection can be enjoyed on multiple flat screen televisions available, sponsors said.

For those who want to continue their music experience after Battle of the Bands, a holiday show, The Stone Cold Country Christmas Show will be taking place at 7:30 p.m. at the Canton Theatre.

To register a band, artists can call The Painted Pig Tavern at (678) 880-1714. For more information about the event, call Canton Main Street Program at (770) 704-1548.
