Sybil Turner Waits, 98, of Canton, Georgia, wife of the late Carl E. Waits (deceased 1976) passed away peacefully on December 23, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born March 31, 1915 in Pickens County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Turner and Harriett Roper Turner of Smyrna, GA. During World War II, Sybil and Carl were married and moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he was assigned to the Army Air Base in that city. During this time, she worked as a nursing assistant at the base hospital. At the end of WWII she and her husband returned to Atlanta and started a home and family. Sybil was a lifelong supporter of her church and community. She was a long time member of the Mount Paran Church of God, a counselor for the 700 Club CBN, a Life member of the Piedmont Hospital Auxiliary and provided generous support to numerous charities and causes. Her personal interests were many and included the arts (she was an accomplished painter), gardening (flowers and herbs), indigenous birds and world travel. Known for her graciousness, Sybil was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, Merrill Waits (Dianne) of McLean, VA and daughter, Mrs. Linda W.
